Nine California Registered Agent Services, Audited for 2026

A flat $99 buys one year of agent for service of process service in California — the registered office, same-day scanning of court papers, and reminders before state deadlines.

California entities do not appoint a "registered agent" under that name; the Corporations Code designates an agent for service of process. Nine commercial vendors compete to fill the role, at annual costs running from a published $90 to an annualized figure near $596, and two of them complicate a straight comparison: one bills quarterly, another declines to publish its renewal at all.

Disclosure precedes rankings here. This page is operated by California Registered Agent.ai, which sells the service holding rank one below. Discount our editorial verdicts as heavily as you think that warrants; the price data is each vendor's own advertised rate and asks for no trust in us.

Scoring Criteria for This Ranking

Three tests set the order. Test one, true recurring cost: the renewal rate, never the teaser. Test two, disclosure: a vendor that publishes its renewal outranks one that conceals it, independent of service quality, because an unpublishable price is information in itself. Test three, what the base rate covers, with same-day handling of service of process weighted heaviest; slow forwarding of a summons is how default judgments happen.

Test one immediately costs us a title. BetterLegal's published $90 makes it the cheapest registered agent service in California by advertised rate, and $99 does not undercut $90. Our rate sits among the lowest flat annual prices in the state, holds identical at every renewal, and includes same-day scanning. That is the whole claim, stated at its actual size.

No. 1: California Registered Agent.ai

$99 per year. The renewal is $99. Year five is $99. Service of process is scanned into the client portal the same business day it is served, with an alert on delivery. No premium tier exists, no compliance upsell waits behind the order form, and the single ancillary charge is disclosed in advance: $15 per item for scanning non-legal mail. The address entered in your filing's agent field is a physical California street address that satisfies the statute. Against our own three tests, that record holds the top position.

No. 2: Northwest Registered Agent

The credible alternative. Northwest discloses its entire schedule: first year free when bundled with formation, then $125 per year for 1-4 states, and $100 per state per year at five states or more. Support is human, and the privacy posture is substantive rather than decorative. It loses only on cost against a $99 flat rate, and only by the margin the table shows.

No. 3: BetterLegal

A published $90 per year, the lowest advertised figure in the field, and it outprices us. That fact earns the podium regardless of our commercial interest in the outcome. The caveat is narrow: first-year billing terms could not be verified during our July 2026 check, so establish the initial charge before committing.

No. 4: Rocket Lawyer

$125 per year on every membership tier, with no first-year discount located, which also means no renewal escalation to warn about. Predictability of that kind deserves credit. The agent product is one module of a broad legal subscription platform; a buyer who needs only an agent is financing surface area they will never touch.

No. 5: ZenBusiness

The strongest software in this field, attached to the wrong price curve. Standalone agent service starts at $99 plus state fees in year one, then renews at $199 per year, roughly double. Score the offer at its $199 renewal; the introductory figure exists to be advertised, not to be kept.

No. 6: Bizee (formerly Incfile)

Formation packages carry agent service free for 3 to 12 months depending on package, after which the standalone $149 per year applies. The free interval is real value with an expiration date attached. Calendar that date, because the $149 arrives without ceremony.

No. 7: LegalZoom

$249 per year, flat, auto-renewing, no first-year discount found: the highest flat annual rate under review, carried by the category's most recognized brand. The premium buys recognition, not additional statutory function. Every service ranked above it satisfies the same California requirements for less money.

No. 8: Swyft Filings

$149 billed quarterly, with no distinct first-year discount found. Annualized, the obligation approaches $596, the steepest effective yearly figure on the page. Quarterly billing on an annual obligation degrades price comparison whether by design or by accident; either way, evaluate it at the annualized total.

No. 9: Inc Authority

First year: $0, included free. Renewal: not published. The FAQ, the premium package pages, and the homepage all decline to state a figure, leaving checkout or a phone call as the only routes to the number. A mandatory recurring service with an undisclosed recurring price fails our second test outright. Last place.

Agent Eligibility Under Cal. Corp. Code § 17701.13

California restricts this role more tightly than any state we compare. Section 17701.13 obligates every LLC to designate and continuously maintain an agent for service of process. Eligible: an individual California resident aged 18 or older at an in-state street address staffed during normal business hours, or a corporation with an effective certificate under Corp. Code § 1505. Ineligible: any LLC, under any circumstances, and the entity itself, a bar the Secretary of State's FAQ states without qualification: no business entity may act as its own agent for service of process. Eligibility will not separate the nine vendors above; all of them clear it. Price and disclosure are where they separate.

Changing Agents: Form LLC-12, $0 Mid-Cycle

California maintains no change-of-agent form because none is needed. The mechanism is an updated Statement of Information, Form LLC-12 for LLCs, submitted through the bizfileOnline portal with the replacement agent listed; corporations use their own statement forms. Filed between scheduled filing periods solely to report the change, the statement costs $0. Filed inside your regular window, only the standard $20 LLC fee, or $25 for a corporation, applies. The consequence for this comparison is structural: vendor lock-in does not exist in California. An unsatisfactory agent can be replaced this week for nothing, which converts every renewal notice you receive into a fresh decision point.

The Biennial Cadence Your Agent Should Be Tracking

An LLC's Statement of Information recurs every two years, due within the six-month window ending on the last day of the registration anniversary month, at $20 per filing; registrants from even-numbered years file in even years, odd in odd. Stock corporations file annually at $25. The late penalty is $250, assessed by the Franchise Tax Board rather than the Secretary of State, and continued non-filing invites suspension. A cycle that skips a calendar year is the easiest kind to lose. Deadline tracking is included in our $99 rate; whichever vendor you evaluate, verify whether compliance alerts are in the base rate or billed separately.

The Decision, Reduced

Nine vendors, one statutory function. Pay $249 for the biggest brand, $90 for the lowest sticker with terms to confirm, or $99 flat for same-day scanning of service of process, a compliant California street address, and a renewal that never moves. The table already made the argument.
