LegalZoom is the most widely known name in this category, and for a first-time owner facing a filing they do not fully understand, hiring a company they have heard of removes a specific, real anxiety. The company has scale, a long operating history, and a support organization sized to match. None of that is marketing invention.

$249 Buys No Additional Statutory Function

Agent service costs $249 a year. Flat, automatically renewed, and with no introductory discount located anywhere in our review. Structurally that is clean: nothing expires, nothing converts, no membership level alters the number.

The limit of what the premium purchases is worth stating precisely. California specifies one job and one standard for it: a designated agent for service of process, resident or qualified in the state, holding a California street address, present during business hours, receiving summonses and Secretary of State correspondence for the entity. Every vendor in this market satisfies that standard as a condition of operating in it. The $150 annual spread between $249 and $99 is not purchasing a more legally effective address.

We have extended that table to ten years deliberately, because auto-renewal is a ten-year mechanism rather than a one-year one. A charge that requires no annual re-approval persists on default, and defaults compound. The convenience is genuine and so is the reason it is offered.

Two further points belong in an honest reckoning of the gap. The first is that scale does not translate into statutory advantage: a large provider and a small one deliver the same legal effect when a process server arrives, because the effect is defined by the state rather than by the vendor. The second is that the premium is not buying speed either, at least not by default. What matters operationally is how quickly a served document reaches you after it lands, and that is a question to put to any provider you are considering, ours included, before the price question is settled.

That last item is worth a sentence of its own, because the biennial cadence is the part California owners most often mishandle. An LLC files its Statement of Information every second year rather than annually, inside a six-month window closing on the last day of the registration anniversary month, with even-year registrants filing in even years. Deadlines that arrive only in alternate years are the ones people lose, and a late filing draws a $250 penalty assessed by the Franchise Tax Board. Whichever provider you choose, establish whether deadline tracking sits in the base rate or in a tier above it.
